I’ve had a lot of questions about whether you can get value from Installing Inner Game while you sleep.
The short answer is: yes. The more complete answer is it’s also good to listen sometimes while you’re fully awake.
Check out the video below for the rest of my thoughts on the matter.

Beyond applications of during sleep
I always enjoy the layers of information that each video has. Here are some jewels that I’m moving forward in sleeping, awake and in-between.
* Trust the fit/match in the direction of optimal learning
* Similar to having an experience with every line in IIG one can have an experience while reading every word of a book, article, etc instead of just being in a cognitive mode , while listening to anything such as music, TED talks, etc.
* I love the question you posed and the answer of “It makes me feel like I’m learning”…it makes me reflect and deepen into my category of what makes me feel like I’m learning”
* The forests of neural fields for the Default and being at your absolute best; I’ll plant a new tree/forest with every new additional experience.
Since I’ve listened to IIG so many times I’m wanting to play around with under times of stress just access the Default and deepen into it by playing a memory of the best listening experience I had and having an even better one.
Best,
T
Hi Devon, I do list to the Inner Game when I go to bed and drift off to sleep. I often wake up 5 -6 hours later with the headphones still on. I will keep it up and let you know my results in the near future. Thank you for everything you are providing, Terry
Thanks for the feedback Terry. The more information we have the better. We’re going into serious development of the next version next month and are already mocking it up now. So, everything helps.
Best,
::Devon::
I drift in and out of different levels of consciousness when I install. I have found that my awareness focuses on different sections of the install with each installation. At times I will be aware that I am hearing something that sounds brand new. I assume that I was unconscious during that section in previous installs. At other times I will hear sections that are familiar, but the context is changed.
Time will tell how this works. My life is so good to begin with and I am so grateful for all that I have; it will be hard to tell where Inner Game comes into play. I believe it is a healthy addition to my spiritual practice.
Steve – you seem to be speaking for a lot of people (see the comments below). Thanks for sounding in on this. As for hearing something that sounds brand new – that’s exactly as it should be. Or at least as I intended it.
That’s what I mean in the videos and comments I keep making about being able to fully process the meaning of every sentence. The more exposure you have and the deeper you ‘get’ the context – the more powerful IIG will become for you.
Thanks again!
~Devon
I’m liking whaty you say and how you present it Devon, good stuff
Hi Devon,
I have to say DITTO to Steve’s comment. Every word of it. Exactly my experience…. But i want to add a personal note as well:
I live very close to the ocean and go there often for periods of solitude and reflection. Saturday morning I took IIG and my headphones with me and spent the whole hour sitting comfortably listening with the full sunny beach experience in the background and it was wonderful to install in my favorite meditative spot….However I noticed that evening and over the next couple of days a huge difference in my mood… At first I thought i must have done the wrong thing by installing in such a personal intimate place because it seemed i had shifted backwards to a more agitated and frustrating mood. I found it difficult to regain my default and very unsettling when even the slightest outer circumstance went wrong. Seemed i had thrown myself off my game instead of centering into the flow state of my default. I worried. Then by the third day i realized even tho i was in a bad mood I was still having the profound thoughts that you mentioned and still learning. I listened again last night as usual drifting in and out of consciousness. Then today i felt an amazing “cleanliness”. I think perhaps listening at the ocean actually may have helped me to reach in deeper and pull out some unnaturally buried resentments for examination and realigning. I definitely recommend listening in sleep as well as also to try listening in other places of personal comfort as well…. It feels like this time i didn’t just sweep the floors of my psyche clean but I even lifted the comfy ole couch and vacuumed some rugs!
Ok .sorry so wordy but i am very verbal… perfect peace…….Rainey
Rainey! I love seeing your name in my inbox. “New comment from Rainey” has become a silent joy in my life.
The unsettling experience shifting into “oh! this is actually working at a deeper level” matches a lot of how my (and many of my student’s/client’s) experiences have been during the past 18 years of doing this kind of work.
The deeper you go, the deeper you can go. And while you’re on your way, if the foundation was a little wobbly in the past, sometimes it needs to be dug up and laid. This can be – to say the lease – uncomfortable sometimes.
This is where that wonderful old parable about the three wise men and the king comes in:
A king sends for his wise men and says, “bring me something that makes me laugh when I am sad and cry when I am happy or you will die in three days time.”
Three days later the wise men come to the king with a ring.
Upon receiving this simple gift the king orders the wise men dead.
“But wait your majesty,” says one of the wise men, “you have not read the inscription.”
With this the king looks at his ring and is shook present with sobs of his own understanding.
“This too shall pass” reads the ring.
I find that the deeper you go the more able you become to withstand even the deepest shifts in your stability because you know – in your body – that you’re going into yet deeper stability. And while the road is rocky you have the certainty that this too shall pass. And that makes all the difference in the world.
Enjoy the ride.
Perfect peace to us all,
Devon
p.s. wordy right back at you Rainey ; )
Sleeping with IIG was good. Listening while awake is incredibly rich. The depth of dimensioning keeps unfolding, unraveling, revealing … what? … multiversal glory, it just keeps on going… ahha. ahha. ahha.
I´m with Steve in how I experience listening to IIG, on the spot!
I´ve had one listen totally awake and aware and that was awesome. Since that listen, I have felt an even deeper change within, like having an easier acces to “decoding” myself and just constantly choosing my default mode, cause my body and mind constantly brings what I/it wants into my awareness, when an old tape runs.
Personally I prefer listening as awake and aware as possible. I did fall asleep on one listen and I couldn´t feel any difference within, when I was back up. When I listen awake, I can allways feel a difference within afterwards. I am simply more awake and aware and empowered.
Thanks again Devon for this great gift!
Much Gratitude
from Sanne in Denmark
You’re welcome Sanne!
Thanks for updating me with your thoughts and experiences.
All my absolute best,
Devon
p.s. I love Denmark, Sanne.
Hey Devon.
Exciting news here! I had another awake and aware listen few days ago. And amazing wonders took place. Deep longtime pain-realted muscular tensions was released in a line through my body from shoulder to foot.
The relase felt like energybubles in the auric field of the areas involved, followed by an energetic “poof” and then the muscles simply just let go. For the rest of the listen, little poofs-releases took place like domino-effect different places in my body. And same thing today. Not big relases, but tiny ones here and there.
Now the muscles is finally able to let go of the longtime pain-related tensions, just like that! How cool is that Devon! – You are really on to something with IIG. I think many ppl with longtime pain due to illness could benefit from IIG.
As mentioned elsewhere, I have not been able myself to fix this myself, though having lifelong experience with meditation and inner work. Extreme pains had “locked” the body and now it is finally being freed through IIG. Thank you again, Devon
Much more Gratitude
from Sanne.
Thank you for the love of Denmark
p.s.
Devon, I hope you are feeling better. lots of love and healing energy straight to you. and as always …….perfect peace…….rainey
Dear Devon White,
I like the idea of splitting your mp3-product into tracks because it allows bypassing the intro as well as selective listening of other parts. I have listened to your various explanations and lectures about “Inner Game” and the mp3 itself. I have a few Q’s of perhaps a philosophical nature. Some of these may sound like statements but I mean them as questions:
1. It seems to me that your use of the word “default” is as a euphemism. It might be helpful if you could give a hint as to what you have in mind by your use of that word? In addition, perhaps a more powerful image could be promoted by the use of the real terminology you have in mind than “default”, which seems to me, like a substitute? I’m not orthodox in my beliefs and have some notions about spiritual subjects. Are you trying to avoid the “New Age” label?
2. I imagine some people may disagree on this point—I find it difficult to be calm and get into a meditative mood, with high volume cacophony; in other words, I think ‘peaceful’, works better. Would you explain your thinking on that?
3. I find your analogy of people (human beings) as like computer systems cute but vaguely demeaning. As a computer engineer and creator of computers and uP circuits etc., I think that analogy, implies people are of a frivolous nature, somewhat unreliable, prone to occasional meltdowns or crashes, and simple minded. I don’t mean to say that computers are not complex. They are. But humans by comparison, make computers seem like a baby’s toy that squeaks and says “ma ma” if you squeeze its stomach.
Maybe I am off the track here? Curious minds, and so forth……
Best wishes and good luck to you
Noelani
Hi Noelani,
Let me address your thoughts in order:
First off we’ve released the tracked version of IIG which is actually how IIG was designed originally. If you don’t have that, you can email either ken or myself to get it. Our emails are:
devon (at) installinginnergame (dot) com
ken (at) installinginnergame (dot) com
1. Regarding the word “Default” I talk about that in the manual, in the actual Inner Game audio, as well as in this video: http://blog.installinginnergame.com/discovering-your-default/ from minute 4:44 on. So, the Default is the actual word I intended to use and I’m pretty far from New Age, so trying to avoid that would be like trying to prove that I’m not rutabaga.
By Default I mean that it is the state all of us were born in and that – until we get interfered with – we reset (default) to naturally.
2. All aspects of the music is deliberate. It’s not for everyone, but it was designed with great intention. Most ’self-improvement’ audio engages only the upper chakras. In IIG we are deliberately addressing the lower chakras as well. That’s why there is so much emphasis on the body. As for cacophony – IIG is designed as a 4th path tool. That means it is meant for people who want their lives to be their spiritual path. They do not want to retreat into peaceful meditation away from the world but instead want to jump into the bloody fray and like Arjun in the Mahābhārata, find deep meaning and satisfaction in their actions. So that cacophony is designed to help the listener remain in their Default even as the world around them is going haywire.
In addition to that, Kiela, the savant behind the soundscapes in IIG, used far-reaching samples and styles to create the experiences in the tracks. If you listen all the way through there are sequences that range from cacophonous to sublime, classical to cutting edge.
3. Before the technology of the pump human beings were diagnosed in terms of the four humours. As our models evolve so does our thinking about ourselves.
I’m a model agnostic. I don’t believe that any of this is Capital T TRUTH, I believe models are useful for certain things and not others. As Niels Bohr said almost a century ago, “If you think you understand quantum mechanics, you don’t understand quantum mechanics.” The same can certainly be said about human consciousness and behavior. However, that doesn’t excuse us from trying to understand, from stretching our consciousness to its limits to transcend our boundaries – if only for a moment.
So, I’m not suggesting that people ARE computers. Rather I’m saying that computers are the most complex analogy that exists and I’ve found it an analogy that allows people to better use and understand themselves. It’s certainly a massive improvement from the DSM series prevalent in modern-day psychology. And the simple idea that we can just reset (along with the fact that it’s true) is profound for every person to whom I’ve ever introduced it.
Another of the best things about the computer and Human Operating System models is that they allow us to establish a universal language for human consciousness and behavior that has the power to yoke together all other models from allopathic medicine to meridians, chakras, Ayurveda, biological psychology, neurology, epigenetics, and anything else we find useful.
Cheers and good luck to you as well Noelani,
~Devon
My experience of listening while I sleep is best described as somewhere between what was described by Steve and rainey above….I emailed you about an anxiety issue, and I think rainey described my experience much better than I did….I typically use meditation to fall asleep, so my first install was in my “favorite meditative spot”. But listening during fully awake times, splitting it up into pieces, skipping back and forth, REALLY makes a difference…..Granted, everything happens for a reason and I must have needed that experience, but I now try to limit listening to times where I can devote full awareness.
Right on. Thanks for the further clarity Yazira. Especially from people who have some deep background with meditation it’s useful to know when and how IIG affects you.
Rock on.
Devon
Great work . I love everything about this !
I have been into meditation for several years now .
I am thrilled that you offered this for free.
After recent other purchases I was not about to take another chance just now.
I also started the Holosync program last fall (if you are familiar with it ) (very expensive )
I MUCH prefer your approach and I have felt changes within myself in a relatively short period of time .
The background is fantastic and totally consumes me many times as I listen .
I have also shared it with a close friend who has been rather depressed and lethargic with the many changes in his life , and he is feeling inspired in a very noticable way . I can see an improvement in him after only listening for 5 days ..
I work in stress management and can see this as a possible add on for some clients .
You are doing something great for mankind.
Keep up the good work Devon .
It is most definitely paying off !
PS>I am going to send some money right now !
Wishing for you to have continued success ,

Hey Bonnie – thanks for the comment!
Great to read and I’m thrilled you’re so pleased with it. Thanks for the encouragement and thanks for sharing it with people you think it will benefit.
Continued success to you as well!

Hi Devon!
I have more sporting news for you…Lately, it’s been all about the eyes for me. I realized that when I ski and mtb, I have predatory eyes, which are tight and focused. They help me cut though a crowd of skiers with precision (without scaring or cutting anyone off, of course). And when I mtb, I’m the mountain lion, locked onto her prey.
The other day, I had a gorgeous experience skiing. I was up high in the bowls, in and out of the trees, and away from the crowds, just taking in the big view I get with soft eyes. But, when I got down to mid-mountain, I suddenly felt disoriented. It appeared as if people were coming from every which way, I was unable to judge speed and direction, and my spatial awareness was shot. It was a trip, because I knew why it was happening, but I just stayed defaulted instead of tensing up about it, and laughed.
The weather was warmer the next day. I’m on my bike, on a snow packed single track that I navigate every spring to get to my house. The consistency of the snow is like a sno-cone, very thick and slippery, and if you fall off, you go sliding down the hill. Anyway, in my mind I hear you say, ‘Allow your eyes to go soft.’ Whoa. My whole body relaxed, I felt very lightweight, and my muscles actually reacted quicker than when they were tense. It was a feeling of being on balance, rather than constantly correcting imbalance.
What are some of your body-in-motion experiences?
Cheers and thanks again!
Andria – love the new comment. So much that I’m going to hold off and answer you in video in the next day or two. Thanks for the inspiration. Talk with you soon.
Cheers and thanks to You!
Devon
Hey Andria – I just posted that video:

Let me know what you think.
Cheers,

Is this where I am supposed to leave email for Devon? I have replied to several of his emails to me and I never got an answer. I know my computer is not anyone else’s problem, but can anyone help me figure it out please? I cannot get the videos to play unless they are utube. I did not see David and I can’t see today’s about teleology. I am really not sure I am “getting” Default at all when I could really use it. I love it when things are going well and I am in a good mood. But, when times are challenging and I try to access Default (relax and feel my body, I have nothing as specific as Jean that I get so far), I am still playing the same old crappy programs. Thanks to anyone out there who responds. Laura
Hi Laura,
I’m sorry if I’ve missed responding to you – I’m fairly certain I haven’t received any emails from you. That said, I get hundreds a day and sometimes they slip through the cracks.
With regard to your questions above – I believe you’re talking about videos from the Phoenix program not Installing Inner Game, am I correct?
Either way, most of the videos in that program are uploaded using Wordpress’s video software, Videopress. Truthfully, I’m not sure why you wouldn’t be able to see those videos. My first response would be to use Firefox or Google Chrome as your browser if you’re not already. If you are then I’m not sure what to do. Sorry, I’ll ask my tech guys if they know what’s up.
As for ‘getting’ your Default – have you been using IIG and watching the videos on this blog? That would be the place to start.
The reason Jean had such specific things to do for herself is because she was working with me privately and so I was able to give her very precise and detailed feedback. While IIG saves time and money and gives you easy access to doing the work frequently, it can’t quite replace the experience of having a skilled practitioner in the room with you working as your own bio-feedback machine
With regard to accessing the Default when times are challenging – the stronger state will always win. So, until you’ve really built up your ‘Default muscles’, if you’re in a challenging situation and you want to reset – make it easier by removing yourself from the situation first and then resetting. If that proves too difficult a good intermediary step is to do something very physical like taking a run first. Then, once you’re done with that, resetting will be a lot easier.
Hope that helps.
All my best,
Devon
For my first session listening to the MP3 was that I felt profoundly bathed in my essence and my energy and my story and my courage and my set of guidelines to follow for transforming any doubt I have for being worthy to here.
I have always given my power over to who ever I am with. Now I feel like my own power needs to be bathed on me.
I just to diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Now I have said the words. And this will be a test to how I am healing right now from such words.
I have always wanted to go deep and I think I just did
Hi Theresa,
That’s inspirational to access your essence on your first listen and direct experience. I would encourage you to trust your thinking of accessing yourself more deeply and to re-access just exactly how you went into the deep and how you could go further.
There’s some writing that may be of interest to you around story and cancer. You can google the Self-Healing Coach or access at: http://www.theselfhealingcoach.com/2010/04/08/the-romance-of-cancer/
Blessings and much healing,
T
Theresa! Thank you so much for commenting and sharing a bit of your story.
Though Tivo beat me to the punch I can’t agree with him more – run don’t walk to http://www.theselfhealingcoach.com
Karen (The Self Healing Coach) was with me every step of the way in creating IIG and she’s applying the same principles intensely to the domain of self healing. Though the blog is addressing MS specifically, 99% of it applies to cancer.
The interviews are great, her writing is outstanding, her knowledge is encyclopedic and her message is impeccable.
And for you – in case you didn’t know this – most of the diagnosis given by doctors around cancer (and many other illnesses) are based on research done with volunteers who usually come from poverty-stricken sectors and who are taking very little initiative in healing themselves. So the statistics of health and healing are highly skewed in a underwhelming and often-times inaccurate direction.
Being one of the people who uses illness as an opportunity to move into a life of greater health, power and meaning all begins with a choice. I could talk about it more but Karen does it so well that I’ll just point you to the specific page:
http://www.theselfhealingcoach.com/call-to-adventure/
I’m so glad you went deep and I wish you all the best on your journey.
With the warmest regards possible,
Devon
Hi Devon,
I have listened to IIG several times now, and one time before falling asleep. What happened that time, was very different from the listening-awake-sessions. A few minutes before the end of the session, I had a feeling of panic, as if there was something wrong with my heart, and I had to breath deeper and it was not enough…. BUT I found a point, where I commanded: Reset to the Default, and it worked, and then IT CAME TO MY MIND, that the panic feeling was coming from an area in my life, where I have not succeeded to put things in order yet, because I am really afraid of the consequences. My body showed me, that the situation is completely against what I need, what matches to me-at-my-best. At that point I decided to transform the situation, and the physical signs disappeared IMMEDIATELY.
I think, that the state of “almost falling asleep” was the listening-state, that enabled me to give up control, so that the not-matching-situation was allowed to come up.
Okay, I really want to thank you for the IIG and the work you are doing, it is the best product I have ever found, with immediate results. AND: I am Austrian and although the IIG is in English, there is something, I would even call it “miraculous”, about the IIG-audio-track: everything in it is absolutely familiar to me, as if it was designed especially for me.
My age is 43 years, and during the last 20 years I have learned a lot and tried a lot about being-at-my-best. There are many parts of IIG, that I knew before IN MY HEAD, and I am a muscle-tester, so I knew before about the importance of the body (and so on), but IIG made me understand it with my body, feeling it, and I am very grateful.
And there is a last thing, which is VERY IMPORTANT for me: I AM FEELING GROUNDED, MUCH MORE GROUNDED than ever before.
Thank you so much for the experience of IIG
My best wishes to you!
Sandra
Thank you Sandra.
What you said about understanding it with your body – that’s exactly what I’m going for so it’s great to hear that it’s working! There’s so much wisdom that we learn and it’s just a matter of unleashing it in our muscles and movement.
As for the almost-falling-asleep state…that’s one of my favorites. In fact, I do my best to stay as close to that state as possible all the time.
And IIG was written for you.
My best wishes to you as well!
Devon
Hi.
Last night I had a amazing experience I have never, ever had before…(hope my englisch can say it properly) for a second/minutes? during my sleep or was I awake? I felt if I was lifted up and weightless… a sort of nothing and all at the same time…love, warmth, peacefullness..deeper than deep…higher than high….like a warm bath but then wider than wide… endless
I had I thought I remember: this you must feel when you are dead; without a body, being mySelf.
It was, so it felt, even further than default state….
Hi Karin!
That is absolutely incredible! Great to hear! Who knows…you listen to IIG enough, and it may become your state in everyday life…keep up the good work
